Urgency check

A short set of questions to help gauge how pressing the equipment concerns look right now. This is an indication of timing only: a PUWER inspection is what identifies which items are defective and what action to take.

How urgent is it?

A short set of questions to help gauge how pressing the equipment concerns look right now. This is an indication of timing only: a PUWER inspection is what identifies which items are defective and what action to take.

Has equipment been installed or modified, or have guards been taken off, in recent weeks?
How exposed is the most dangerous moving part you can see?
Do emergency stops or interlocks fail to work, or have they been bypassed?
Do untrained or temporary staff, or members of the public, use or work near the equipment?
  1. No rush
  2. Worth booking soon
  3. Get it assessed promptly

A guide only; the confirmed answer comes from a specialist on site. Arrange an assessment to have the equipment formally inspected.

What each level means

  1. No rush Nothing here points to serious faults. Photograph the current state of guards and controls with dates and book an inspection at a convenient time to establish a baseline record.
  2. Worth booking soon The picture is worth acting on before long. Addressing guards and controls while issues are still minor keeps remedial work proportionate and reduces the risk of injury.
  3. Get it assessed promptly Exposed moving parts, non-functioning stops or untrained operators make this time-sensitive. Take affected equipment out of use and arrange an inspection as soon as possible.
