How a PUWER inspection works

Each stage of a puwer inspection follows a set order, from the initial check to the written report.

  1. Book the inspection

Use the booking form to confirm the address, the type of work equipment involved and the number of items to be inspected. Include plant, machinery, industrial doors, roller shutters, racking or any other work equipment that falls under PUWER. The price is set at the point of booking.

  2. Confirm access and timing

A specialist will be in touch to agree the visit date and work through any access requirements. If equipment is in a locked plant room, a fenced compound or a mezzanine level, say so at this stage. The specialist will give a realistic time allowance based on the number of items and the site layout.

  3. The inspection visit

On the day, the specialist works through each item on the schedule. They check that guards are in place and properly fixed, that controls are clearly marked and within reach, that lighting at the workstation is adequate, and that the equipment is suitable for the task it performs. Condition, stability, maintenance history and any previous inspection records are all taken into account.

  4. Risk rating and findings

Each item inspected is assessed against the requirements of PUWER. Defects and shortfalls are recorded and assigned a risk rating. The specialist notes whether the issue requires immediate action, a scheduled repair or a monitoring arrangement, and records any items that could not be fully accessed on the day.

  5. Written inspection report

A written report is produced covering every item inspected. It sets out the condition found, the risks identified and the actions required, ranked by urgency. Items that present an immediate danger are flagged separately so the responsible person can act without delay.

  6. Documentation you keep on site

The completed report and any certificates issued by the specialist are yours to file. They form the dated record of inspection that the Health and Safety Executive expects duty holders to hold, and they support any insurance, audit or enforcement enquiry that follows.
